Lionel Messi is finally clarifying what really went wrong at PSG: he was unhappy on the pitch, not in Paris. The Argentine star is now revisiting his two years in France and the picture is far less dramatic than what many believed.
Since leaving PSG in 2023, Messi didn’t shy away from saying he hadn’t enjoyed his time in France. Many took it as a total rejection of Paris. But in an interview with Sport, the Inter Miami forward set the record straight: no, his Parisian life wasn’t hell at all.
Messi says he loved the city, the family experience, and the new lifestyle. “People might think Paris was a nightmare, but it wasn’t,” he explained. “If I say I didn’t have a good time, it’s because I wasn’t happy with what I was doing: playing football, the daily routine, training sessions, matches. I simply didn’t feel good.”
He even insisted: “Honestly, as a family we had a wonderful experience. The city is spectacular, we loved it.”
A shock after leaving Barcelona
For the first time in his life, Messi had left Barcelona, his home, his comfort zone. Everything was new, confusing, difficult. He describes that transition as a huge personal challenge that weighed on his performances and his morale. “It was the first time we left Barcelona, and everything was new for us. It was very tough. But the truth is, I just wasn’t happy doing what I love every day.”
Signed in 2021, Messi played 75 matches for PSG. A short, intense, sometimes painful chapter… but far from the “nightmare” he once hinted at. Today, calmer and settled in Miami, La Pulga wants to clear things up.
Yes ! Paris was actually pretty great.
