Warning: PSG Are Set to Lose the Ligue 1 Title

PSG have lost the honorary title of autumn champions. Despite a hard-fought win against Metz (3-2), Paris surrendered the top spot in Ligue 1 to Racing Club de Lens, who delivered a convincing victory over Nice (2-0) in front of a buzzing Bollaert stadium. And this shift is far from insignificant.

Thanks to this win, Lens finish the first half of the season as leaders, one point ahead of PSG, and establish themselves as serious title contenders. Behind them, Olympique de Marseille remain in the race. After a narrow win over Monaco (1-0), OM return to the podium and close to within four points of PSG and five of Lens, while Monaco languish in a distant ninth place.

Lens in a Strong Position for the Title Race

Historically, leading at the winter break is a strong signal. Over the last 25 seasons, 15 teams sitting top at mid-season went on to become champions. Lens are aware, however, that the 2001-2002 precedent calls for caution. In recent years, this scenario has benefited PSG multiple times, as well as Lille and Lyon, while only ten teams failed to hold onto first place, including Lens themselves in 2001-2002.

But in an open Ligue 1 and against a PSG side lacking consistency, the club from Artois can clearly dream of a second title after 1998, or at the very least another podium finish.
