PSG face a major test this Wednesday at San Mamés for Matchday 6 of the Champions League. Kickoff time, broadcast info, stakes and probable lineups: here’s everything you need to know before the match.
The stakes:
After the heavy defeat in Munich, Paris reacted by beating Tottenham 5–3. A win in Bilbao would strengthen their position in the top 8 and bring PSG closer to a direct qualification for the round of 16, avoiding the play-off round. But San Mamés is one of the most hostile grounds in Europe: Bilbao are fighting for survival, promising intensity, duels and high pressing. Paris will need to respond both physically and tactically.
Lineups
Luis Enrique has included a small surprise: Mayulu starts as the centre-forward.
For PSG, Safonov is in goal, with a back four of Zaïre-Emery, Marquinhos, Pacho, and Nuno Mendes, who has been declared fit. Vitinha plays as the holding midfielder, supported by Neves on the right and Fabián Ruiz on the left. Up front: Barcola on the right, Kvaratskhelia on the left, and Mayulu leading the line.
PSG lineup: Safonov – Zaïre-Emery, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes – Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz – Barcola, Mayulu, Kvaratskhelia.
For Bilbao, no major surprises. Berchiche does indeed start as the left centre-back alongside Vivian. Nico Williams and Berenguer play on the wings, with Sancet supporting striker Guruzeta.
Bilbao lineup: Unai Simon – Areso, Vivian, Berchiche, Boiro – Jauregizar, Galarreta – Berenguer, Sancet, Nico Williams – Guruzeta.
Referee: a positive sign for Paris
German referee Daniel Siebert will officiate the match. PSG have won all three games he has refereed: Bruges – PSG (0–5) in 2019, Haifa – PSG (1–3) in 2022, and PSG – Girona (1–0) in 2024.
Bilbao, on the other hand, have a bad memory: a 4–1 defeat to Manchester United.
We’ll see tonight whether Paris’ streak continues.
In short: whichever version he chooses, Luis Enrique will field a team ready for a fierce battle at San Mamés. Verdict at 9 p.m.
