Champions League. PSG Misses Early Qualification, Trouble Ahead

PSG had an early chance to secure qualification on Wednesday night in Bilbao. But after struggling against a solid Athletic side carried by a monumental Unai Simón, Paris failed to validate its ticket for the next stage of the Champions League. The 0–0 draw at San Mamés keeps the Parisians in a good position… but nothing is secured yet.

Champions League: what must PSG do to qualify after the 0–0 in Bilbao? Here is exactly what PSG needs to do to advance. For now, Paris is hanging on to the playoffs, but Luis Enrique would like to avoid that scenario…

PSG’s Possible Paths to Qualification After the Bilbao Draw

1. A win in either of the last two matches will guarantee that Paris goes through. The simplest situation: win at least one of the remaining games against Sporting Portugal or Newcastle. One victory would be enough to secure, at minimum, a playoff spot. Two wins would even offer a real chance at reaching the Top 8, meaning direct qualification for the round of 16.

2. A draw might be enough… but not always. With this 0–0 in Bilbao, PSG keeps some breathing room but no longer fully controls its destiny. A draw in one of the two remaining matches could suffice, provided other results go their way. Otherwise, Paris will have to wait for the final match to clinch direct qualification.

3. If PSG slips again, there will be no room for error. A loss against Sporting or Newcastle would seriously complicate matters. PSG still has its fate in its own hands… as long as it doesn’t lose.

4. The ideal scenario vanished in Bilbao. The draw simply delays the goal, but qualification remains well within reach. With 13 points and two matchdays left in the league phase, PSG can no longer drop out of the top 24 positions that guarantee at least a playoff spot next February.

In summary: what must PSG do to qualify? – Win one of the last two matches → Qualification guaranteed – Draw → Possible qualification depending on other results – Loss → Must win the final match PSG is not in danger… but it no longer has any margin for error. The final two matchdays will be decisive.
