Ousmane Dembélé is no longer a gamble. Signed for €50 million, he is now a Ballon d’Or winner, the face of PSG’s project, and the club’s most valuable player. But his meteoric rise has triggered a new battle — this time off the pitch: his salary.
After a historic season, Dembélé’s camp is demanding a massive pay increase, one that reflects his new status. He no longer wants to be just a key player; he wants to be the highest-paid star in the squad. The problem? PSG refuses. According to Jérôme Rothen, the club is determined not to break its wage structure or repeat the financial excesses of the Messi-Neymar era. Paris wants a leader, not a privileged untouchable.
A Shock Exit on the Horizon?
Behind this standoff lies a real risk: losing the Ballon d’Or. Walid Acherchour warns that if the dispute drags on, Dembélé could be tempted by Saudi Arabia, where an enormous contract awaits — a final jackpot far from European competition.
“My theory is that by the end of the year or next year, PSG and Ousmane Dembélé will not reach an agreement on an extension,” Acherchour said on RMC.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens”
“Dembélé will want to secure one last huge contract in a league that can offer it, like Saudi Arabia. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens,” he added.
The battle has begun. Dembélé wants to be paid as number one. PSG wants to protect its financial balance. This is no longer about dribbles — it’s about millions and image. The club has made performance-based wages a core principle. Is PSG ready to lose its best player over a matter of principle?
