Former Paris Saint-Germain player Lieke Martens has announced the loss of her second child in a deeply emotional message shared on Instagram.
Just a few weeks after revealing her pregnancy, the Dutch international (159 caps) shared devastating news. In a message filled with emotion, the former Paris player, who was expecting a second son with her husband Benjamin van Leer, wrote: “We recently shared the happy news that we were expecting a second son. It is with immense sadness that we must inform you that the pregnancy did not go well and that we have lost our son.”
A painful loss and time needed to heal
Deeply affected, the 2017 European champion with the Netherlands spoke about the pain of this ordeal and her need to rebuild herself surrounded by loved ones: “This loss affects us deeply.”
“As a family, we would like to take the time and space to process this and give it the space it needs. Thank you for your understanding and support.” Away from the pitch since last September to focus on her family, Martens is now going through an especially difficult period.
