Starting against Colombia, Brice Samba took the opportunity to show his support for Lucas Chevalier, who is struggling but still part of the French national team setup.
There is no room for sympathy just months before the World Cup. Lucas Chevalier has dropped to third place in the French team’s goalkeeping hierarchy. And that is better than nothing, as he is no longer playing at Paris Saint-Germain.
Strong Competition Among French Goalkeepers
Having become the number two behind Mike Maignan thanks to the rotation system implemented by Didier Deschamps, Samba delivered a solid performance in the 3-1 win over Colombia. Beyond his display, the goalkeeper also wanted to send a message to Chevalier, who has been pushed down the ranks after a difficult spell at PSG.
“Lucas, we support him, we stand behind him,” Samba said, acknowledging the intense competition for his position. He emphasized how demanding the goalkeeper role can be, with ups and downs over time.
“Lucas, we support him, we stand behind him. We all know his qualities. Right now, I’m the number two, and I’ll be at Mike’s service to ensure everything goes as well as possible. And if I’m called upon, I’ll try to deliver as I have done.” Despite this challenging period, Chevalier remains part of the squad as the third-choice goalkeeper.
