Lens Take Ligue 1 Lead as PSG Slip, A Bad Omen for Paris?

Lens took full advantage of PSG and Marseille’s poor results, climbing to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2–1 win at Angers. Florian Thauvin delivered a brilliant performance, scoring twice and guiding the Sang et Or to first place for the first time since 2004.

Despite a late push from Angers and a cancelled penalty, Lens held on. Marseille, meanwhile, failed to seize the chance and let the top spot slip away.

Lille also made a crucial move, stealing a 1–0 victory at Le Havre thanks to an 88th-minute goal from Hamza Igamane on a pass from Ethan Mbappé. Down to ten men after Bouaddi’s red card, Lille dug deep, climbed to 4th place, and left Le Havre stuck in 14th after a fourth straight game without a win.

History says it clearly: when PSG aren’t top after 14 games, they don’t win the league

According to Statsdufoot, this is the first time PSG have not been league leaders after 14 matchdays since the 2020–21 season — a year in which Paris finished second behind Lille. The same scenario occurred in 2016–17, when Monaco eventually won the title.

With Champions League pressure, a long injury list and stronger competition than in recent years, PSG may be heading toward a much harder Ligue 1 campaign than expected. The title race hasn’t been this open in a very long time.
