Paris Saint-Germain have barely started their season and have already received an early warning. Beaten 1-0 by RC Lens on Sunday in the Trophée des Champions, the capital club missed out on their first trophy of the 2026-2027 campaign.
Lost the Trophée des Champions? Time to move on. The defeat does not particularly worry Luis Enrique, but the PSG coach knows his team cannot afford to ease off this season. Asked about the Ligue 1 title race, the Spaniard named the teams he believes are capable of causing problems for the reigning French champions.
Lens, Marseille, Monaco and Lille Among PSG’s Main Rivals
“Can Lens be a tough opponent? If we look at what they did last year, they will be a difficult opponent. Then there are Monaco, Marseille, Lille and all the others. It is a difficult league. You have to perform well to win this championship,” Luis Enrique warned during his press conference. The Spanish coach clearly does not want his players to take the title for granted, especially after Lens showed they are capable of beating PSG in a one-off game.
On paper, Paris nevertheless remain overwhelming favourites to retain their crown. Luis Enrique still has a squad with greater depth and quality than those of his main rivals, while the summer transfer window has considerably strengthened PSG’s attacking options. Monaco, Marseille and Lille will therefore be hoping to take advantage of any dip in form from the Parisians.
But after this first setback against Lens, Luis Enrique’s message is clear: PSG will have to earn their Ligue 1 title, and nobody will give them anything for free. Paris remain the dominant force in French football, but their coach is already refusing to allow any complacency to creep into his squad.
