Marquinhos, Dembélé, Safonov, transfer window: Luis Enrique’s truths before Metz/PSG

Luis Enrique cast doubt on Marquinhos’ availability for Metz-PSG and the Intercontinental Cup. Affected in his right hip, the PSG captain remains under treatment and his return is not guaranteed. Ousmane Dembélé, meanwhile, is continuing a cautious individual comeback. The Parisian coach also spoke about the winter transfer window, goalkeeper management and the overall condition of his squad, which he considers to be on a positive trajectory despite injuries.

Uncertainty surrounds Marquinhos. At a press conference on the eve of the trip to Metz, Luis Enrique did not hide his doubts about his captain’s presence for the Intercontinental Cup. “I don’t know if he will be available for the Intercontinental Cup, the doctor can say,” said the Spanish coach, suggesting that the decision will depend on how the muscle fatigue in his right hip evolves.

Injuries, Rotation and the January Window

PSG also confirmed in their medical update that Marquinhos remains under care and is heading toward missing out in Ligue 1. The same caution applies to Ousmane Dembélé. Ill midweek, the winger has returned to individual training, but without rushing. “We have to be careful,” Luis Enrique insists, aware that the Frenchman has not yet been able to string together matches under normal conditions since the start of the season.

Asked about the winter transfer window, the Paris coach appeared open without making it a priority. “We analyze everything, we know where we want to go. If you know very interesting and cheaper players, I’m open to listening,” he said with a smile, while recalling the difficulty of recruiting in January and the trust placed in the club’s young talents.

Luis Enrique also praised the reliability of his goalkeepers, notably Safonov, who has delivered convincing performances in the absence of Lucas Chevalier. Despite the run of away games and absences, the Spanish coach remains positive. He believes PSG are continuing the momentum from the end of last season and hopes to recover all injured players after Christmas to tackle “the most important part of the season.” The remaining question is whether Marquinhos will be part of it for the Intercontinental Cup.
