Paris Saint-Germain qualified the hard way. On Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes, the Parisians were held to a spectacular 2-2 draw by AS Monaco in the second leg of the 2025-2026 Champions League playoffs. It was still enough to secure a place in the round of 16 thanks to a 5-4 aggregate victory.
For a long time, PSG flirted with disaster. Too imprecise, too disorganized, the Parisian club struggled in the first half. After the match, Luis Enrique did not hide his frustration on Canal+. “Is that a trick question? No, I don’t like it when the level is like that. I don’t like it, but that’s football.”
Monaco dominance and a tense finish at Parc des Princes
The Spanish coach acknowledged Monaco’s superiority during the opening 45 minutes: “In the first half we were very imprecise.”
After the break, Paris showed a different face. More in control and sharper in attack. “In the second half, however, we controlled the whole match, we scored the two goals, it’s the perfect result,” the Paris coach analyzed. But PSG simply cannot do things the easy way. In the final seconds, Monaco pulled one back, sending a wave of anxiety through the stadium: “In the last action we suffered and conceded a goal, it was dangerous.” A warning without consequences — but a warning nonetheless.
Despite everything, the main objective was achieved. Paris will be in the round of 16. “We’re happy. We knew that to continue in the Champions League you have to know how to manage this kind of match, we are experts at that,” insisted Luis Enrique.
Asked whether his team can reach last season’s level again, the Spaniard replied mischievously: “That’s a question you should ask our opponents.” Before concluding confidently: “It’s very, very, very difficult to play against us.” PSG came very close to disaster. But they are still standing. And still in the race.
