PSG ordered to pay a small fortune to Buffon: the smart clause pays off

PSG

The Paris Court of Appeal has ruled in favor of Gianluigi Buffon. PSG must now pay their former goalkeeper €250,000 as part of a tax clause included in his contract during his 2018–2019 stint at the club.

The Italian legend had foreseen potential issues with the Italian tax authorities and had negotiated a smart clause: if a tax adjustment related to his time at PSG occurred, the club would contribute to the penalty. In 2021, Buffon was hit with a €1.2 million tax bill—and he triggered the clause.

PSG loses on appeal

PSG initially lost the case in labor court and had appealed the decision. But the ruling has now been upheld. The only win for the French club: Buffon will not receive the extra €25,000 in damages he was also seeking.

The outcome? A costly lesson for PSG—and a brilliant piece of contractual foresight by Buffon, who proves that his reflexes off the pitch are just as sharp as they were on it.
