The rest period granted to Ousmane Dembélé by PSG continues to spark debate. Officially, the club says the break was agreed with Luis Enrique and the sporting management to allow the player to recover. But Daniel Riolo wonders whether it may actually be hiding a disciplinary sanction.
The timing inevitably raises questions. Dembélé will remain away from the squad for several days before returning to training with the group on Monday. The decision comes just after he was substituted at half-time against Rennes, in a match where Luis Enrique appeared to send a strong message to several senior players.
Is Dembélé really just being rested?
Speaking on RMC, Riolo openly questioned whether this was a punishment in disguise. “Are we talking about a week off, or can we say things clearly and call it a heavy punishment?” he asked. The journalist also pointed to Dembélé’s preparation, arguing that the situation seems unusual given that the forward had followed a specific programme and appeared ready to play regularly. “When I read ‘he’ll be back on Monday’, that actually means in a week, even though he had undergone special preparation and was ready to play,” Riolo added.
For Riolo, the explanation of a simple physical break may therefore not tell the whole story. “Problems happen, that’s life at a football club,” he said, suggesting that an internal incident could potentially be behind the decision. The pundit even went further, without claiming that PSG are currently considering a transfer: “If we’re going to speculate, I wouldn’t rule out a departure. I wouldn’t be shocked.”
At this stage, however, there is no official information suggesting that Dembélé has been punished or that there is a breakdown in his relationship with PSG. The club maintains its position that the forward is simply being given several days of rest and will return to training on Monday. Still, this unusual decision, combined with his half-time substitution against Rennes, inevitably fuels speculation. A planned break or a genuine punishment? The coming days should provide a clearer picture.
