PSG. Safonov and Zabarnyi: Is the Cold War Just for the Cameras?

An icy scene… but apparently not a dressing room problem. Facing each other during the internal friendly match organized Saturday at the PSG Campus, Matvey Safonov and Illia Zabarnyi showed a very visible distance before kick-off. But according to a PSG insider, everything is actually fine between the two players.

Matvey Safonov and Illia Zabarnyi did not shake hands before the friendly match organized between PSG players at the Campus last week. Images shared on social media confirmed the sequence: the two players completely ignored each other on the pitch.

Political Pressure Beyond Football

Unsurprisingly, the situation remains extremely sensitive in the context of the war between Russia and Ukraine. When he arrived at PSG from Bournemouth, Zabarnyi had already made his position very clear. “I have to interact with him professionally in training and fulfill my obligations to the club,” the Ukrainian international explained, while also stating that he had “no relationship with Russians.”

But according to insider Djamel, the scene should absolutely not be interpreted as an internal conflict at PSG. “Internally, they are two great professionals. There is absolutely no tension between them, they are happy at the club and perfectly integrated into the dressing room. PSG is also delighted with their commitment,” he explained.

According to the same source, the situation goes far beyond football. A simple public handshake could trigger huge political controversies in their respective countries. The example of Ruslan Malinovskyi, who was forced to apologize after simply greeting Aleksandr Golovin, is still fresh in everyone’s mind. The message is therefore clear: this is not a cold war inside the PSG dressing room, but rather a precaution that has become almost mandatory because of external and media pressure.
