Paris Saint-Germain will face Chelsea on Wednesday, March 11 at the Parc des Princes (9:00 p.m., Canal+), in the first leg of the 2025–2026 Champions League Round of 16. UEFA has appointed Spanish referee Alejandro Hernandez (43) to officiate the match.
Relatively inexperienced at this level with only nine Champions League matches refereed, he will be assisted by José Naranjo and Diego Sanchez Rojo, while José Luis Munuera will serve as the fourth official. The VAR team will consist of Carlos Del Cerro Grande and Cesar Soto Grado.
A referee known for issuing few cards
Statistically, Hernandez shows few yellow cards, averaging just two per match in the competition, well below the usual standards. He has also never issued a direct red card in the Champions League.
However, he does not hesitate to send players off after a second yellow card. When it comes to penalties, he sits around the competition average with 0.33 awarded per match.
Finally, it is worth noting that the Spanish referee has never officiated a PSG match in the Champions League. He has, however, refereed Chelsea this season during the league phase, when the Blues lost to Atalanta (2-1).
