Despite a strong start and clear dominance, PSG were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle at the Parc des Princes. A frustrating result which, combined with other scores, pushes Paris out of the top eight. As last season, the Parisians will have to go through the playoffs if they hope to reach the round of 16.
PSG had started the evening perfectly. In the 2nd minute, Paris were awarded a penalty after a handball, but Dembélé was denied by Nick Pope. Far from being discouraged, the hosts kept pushing and were rewarded in the 6th minute when Vitinha scored with a fine placed strike after good work from Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia.
Dominance without efficiency
Superior in possession and technically on top, Luis Enrique’s men created several dangerous situations through Dembélé, Barcola and Kvaratskhelia. But as too often this season, efficiency was missing. Newcastle, under pressure, held on and took advantage of a set piece just before the break to equalize through Willock’s header in stoppage time.
In the second half, the game became more open and more fragmented. Paris kept the ball, but Newcastle grew increasingly dangerous on the counter. Safonov had to make several key saves, notably against Gordon and Barnes, while Marquinhos saved his team with a decisive tackle.
PSG still had chances, but inaccuracy and haste prevented them from regaining the lead. This draw leaves a bitter taste and condemns Paris to the playoffs, the symbol of another European campaign that has been too inconsistent, despite some strong individual performances led by Vitinha and a decisive Safonov.
