Dominant but terribly wasteful, PSG lost in Lisbon against Sporting (2–1) in the Champions League, a frustrating defeat that complicates their race for a top-eight finish. Despite a very strong performance in open play, the Parisians were punished by two opposition chances and now see their hopes of direct qualification under threat.
With this defeat, Paris temporarily drop to fifth place with 13 points and remain under pressure from their chasers ahead of a decisive final matchday against Newcastle. The margin for error has all but disappeared, and the outcome of the group will hinge on that last fixture.
A frustrating night in Lisbon
Luis Enrique was both frustrated by the result and proud of the performance, believing his team largely dominated the match. “It’s disappointing because it’s unfair. It’s the best away match we’ve played. I’m very proud of my players. With this mentality, I’m sure we’ll go far. The result is disappointing, it’s a shame,” said the Spanish coach.
He added: “I saw only one team throughout the match. We were better than the opponent, who were very good. It’s disappointing because it’s unfair; it’s hard to talk about football right now. Shit football.”
PSG will be left with huge regrets, all the more so because three goals were disallowed and a lack of clinical finishing once again proved extremely costly.
