PSG suffered a cruel defeat in Lisbon against Sporting (2-1) after a match they largely dominated. Ultra-dominant in the first half, the Parisians created many chances but kept running into an excellent Rui Silva. A goal by Zaïre-Emery was ruled out for a foul by Mayulu, and at half-time the score remained a frustrating 0-0 despite clear Parisian control.
In the second half, against the run of play, Sporting opened the scoring from a corner through Luis Suarez in the 74th minute. Paris pushed even harder and were rewarded when Kvaratskhelia, coming off the bench, produced a stunning strike into the top corner to equalize in the 79th minute.
PSG punished despite clear dominance
But just as PSG were pressing for a winner, they were caught out again: a shot was pushed back by Chevalier and Suarez followed up to complete his brace in the 90th minute. It was a very harsh defeat for Paris, who paid dearly for a huge lack of efficiency in front of goal and a few defensive lapses.
Player ratings for PSG: Chevalier (5), little to do but not blameless on the second goal. Zaïre-Emery (6.5), very active and solid, had a goal disallowed. Marquinhos (6), generally clean but pushed the ball away on the first goal action. Pacho (6.5), solid and aggressive in duels. Nuno Mendes (6.5), very dangerous going forward. Vitinha (6.5), the team’s playmaker with a lot of activity. Fabian Ruiz (6), good in possession but not decisive. Mayulu (5), interesting but at fault for the foul that disallowed the goal. Désiré Doué (6), lively but lacked precision. Barcola (5.5), active but too inaccurate. Dembélé (7), the most dangerous, with an assist for Kvaratskhelia.
Substitutes: Kvaratskhelia (7), a decisive impact with a superb equalizer. Gonçalo Ramos (5), little influence. Zabarnyi (not rated), came on too late. Overall, PSG outplayed Sporting but were punished for their inefficiency and mistakes, in a match that once again showed that dominance alone is not enough.
