Invited to the After Foot on RMC, Leonardo offered a clear and very complimentary view of Marco Verratti (33), whom he himself recruited in 2012. For the former sporting director of PSG, the Italian has been one of the absolute pillars of the Qatari project… but he might have been able to reach even greater heights.
Free to speak, Leonardo shares his true judgment on Marco Verratti. And his words are quite positive. The former Parisian sporting director believes that the Italian, despite his immense impact in Paris, could have taken an additional step by joining a top European club after five years. “Maybe after five years, he should have joined an even bigger club,” the Brazilian suggests, convinced that the Italian midfielder had the talent to aim for the pinnacle of continental football.
It should be noted that Marco Verratti’s agent had pushed for a departure… in 2017. It was towards FC Barcelona. At that time, Leonardo was no longer at PSG, and the club retained the player, even making him publish a video of apologies… a sequence that deeply marked the impression that PSG kept its players captive.
Verratti carried PSG for years, it was too much
The former executive also highlights the mental burden carried by the “Little Owl”: eleven seasons at PSG, constant pressure, and heavy responsibilities for a player often in the spotlight. “He went through complicated moments, he carried a lot of things, and it’s often the most important who take the hits,” explains Leonardo.
But for him, there is no question of talking about waste. On the contrary: Verratti remains, in his view, an immense player, a unique technician who has made history at the club. “Marco has been an enormous player,” concludes Leonardo, with the affection and admiration he is known for.
