A former PSG academy graduate is returning to familiar territory. Christopher Nkunku has officially completed his return to RB Leipzig, three years after leaving the German club. The France international, developed at PSG, is heading back to the Bundesliga hoping to rediscover the form that once made him one of the league’s most dangerous players.
Nkunku is returning to Leipzig in search of a fresh start. The deal is reportedly a paid loan worth around €3 million, with a purchase option of approximately €27 million. Newcastle were also interested in the Frenchman, but Nkunku is said to have made Leipzig his preferred destination.
The former PSG talent returns to where he flourished
Leipzig has always held a special place in Nkunku’s career. After coming through the PSG academy and making his professional debut in Paris, the attacking midfielder left the French capital in 2019 in search of a bigger role. The decision transformed his career, as he became one of the Bundesliga’s standout players and finished as the league’s top scorer in the 2022-23 season. His first spell with Leipzig ended with an impressive record of 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 appearances in all competitions.
Those performances earned him a move to Chelsea in 2023, but injuries prevented him from finding the same consistency in England. Three years after leaving Leipzig, Nkunku has now chosen to return to an environment he knows perfectly well. At 28, the move represents an opportunity to rebuild his momentum and rediscover the level that made him such a major threat in Germany.
Newcastle’s interest makes his decision even more significant, but Nkunku ultimately opted for a return to his former club. For PSG, the move is also another reminder of the unusual career path of one of its academy graduates. Seven years after leaving Paris and following several experiences abroad, Christopher Nkunku is back in Leipzig with one clear objective: to become the best version of himself again.
