Yaya Touré could have worn the Paris Saint-Germain shirt. The Ivorian revealed this in Zack Nani’s show, where he revisited a little-known episode of his career: his aborted transfer to Paris.
Yaya Touré and PSG: the missed opportunity that could have changed everything. The player explains that he could have signed in Paris before launching his major career elsewhere. “I didn’t want to go to Ukraine. For me, Paris Saint-Germain or another club in France was the top. Going to PSG was taken away from me. I know the details: PSG wanted to pay in two installments, the Ukrainian club wanted cash,” said the former Ivorian international.
A transfer halted by financial demands
A financial decision that changed his fate. Instead of joining Ligue 1, Yaya Touré ultimately headed to Metalurh Donetsk in 2003, a brief stint that served as a springboard toward top-level European football.
Yaya Touré then built a remarkable career… far from PSG. The rest is well known: AS Monaco, then above all FC Barcelona, where he won the Champions League in 2009. Finally, Manchester City, where he became a club legend, a four-time English champion and a central figure in the club’s rise.
Imagining Touré at the Parc des Princes is enough to spark a few regrets. Would the 2000s PSG have entered another dimension with such a complete, powerful and elegant midfielder? History will never tell. But one thing is certain: Paris came very close to a giant.
