They have won the Champions League, they dominate Europe… but despite their successes, PSG remains under close scrutiny from UEFA. The club is walking a very fine financial line, with the risk of being sanctioned at the slightest misstep.
Financial Fair Play still looms over Paris: accounts in the green… but maximum vigilance. According to L’Équipe, Paris escaped new sanctions this summer, unlike FC Barcelona, Chelsea, or Olympique Lyonnais. The club had already been punished with a fine of €65 million (of which €10 million was paid immediately) three years ago.
Today, they are still under financial control, with a strict rule to follow: expenses related to the squad (salaries, transfers, commissions) must not exceed 70% of revenues. Internally, the message is clear according to L’Équipe: “If we exceed, we are punished.”
No more XXL spending
The departure of Neymar, Messi, and Mbappé has eased the wage bill, but the context remains fragile. The uncertainty surrounding TV rights in France allows for no extravagance. During the last transfer window, each transfer was validated under the watchful eye of UEFA. The case of Illia Zabarnyi, for example, could only be finalized after weekly validation by financial controllers.
PSG acknowledges that the era of transfers over €200 million is over. The management wants to be cautious: “It would be stupid to fall back into the red. We are in good sporting and economic health. It would be crazy to repeat the mistakes of the past. There are rules to follow, otherwise we are punished.”
European champions, untouchable on the field, but prisoners of their accounts, PSG knows that the future will be determined as much in UEFA’s offices as on the pitch. The club can no longer afford to make mistakes.
