Champions League: Outside the Top 8, a nightmare scenario for PSG?

Despite overwhelming dominance, PSG lost 2–1 away to Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday night on matchday 7 of the Champions League league phase. This defeat, only the Parisians’ second in the competition this season, could have serious consequences for their standing and their hopes of direct qualification for the round of 16.

After the first matches of this matchday, PSG sit provisionally in fifth place with 13 points, behind Arsenal, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Tottenham. But this position is fragile: several teams can still overtake or catch them, including Atalanta, Atlético Madrid and Liverpool. In addition, Newcastle, Chelsea and Barcelona could draw level with Paris if they win, in which case everything could come down to goal difference, an area where PSG currently hold only a slim edge.

A must-win to avoid the playoffs

With one match left in this first phase, the Parisian club therefore no longer has much room for error. Everything will be decided in the final game against Newcastle next Wednesday at the Parc des Princes, which promises to be decisive in order to avoid the playoffs.

Luis Enrique, however, had played down the absolute importance of finishing in the top eight, reminding everyone that direct qualification is a goal, but not necessarily an end in itself.
