Dominant for more than an hour, PSG nevertheless left Lisbon with a cruel defeat against Sporting (2-1). Wasteful in front of goal and punished on two situations, the Parisians paid a heavy price for their lack of clinical finishing despite a gem from Kvaratskhelia.
PSG started the match by completely monopolizing the ball. Luis Enrique’s men suffocated Sporting and created a multitude of chances from the opening minutes, but kept running into an outstanding Rui Silva.
Kvaratskhelia’s moment of brilliance
Doué, Vitinha, Mendes, Mayulu and Dembélé all missed the opener in turn. Zaïre-Emery thought he had scored, but his goal was disallowed for a foul by Mayulu at the start of the move. At the break, the score was 0-0, totally illogical given Paris’s dominance.
After the interval, the script did not change: Paris attacked, Lisbon endured. But against the run of play, Sporting took the lead from a corner through Luis Suárez (74th). Paris reacted immediately and were rewarded by an individual feat from substitute Kvaratskhelia (79th), who unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner.
PSG then seemed capable of turning the match around, but it was Sporting who struck again. In the 90th minute, a shot was pushed away by Chevalier and Suárez, again, followed up to give the Portuguese side the win. An extremely harsh defeat for PSG, punished for their inefficiency and lack of cutting edge.
