Spurs confirmed the news in a statement: Mateus Fernandes is signing in London, for Tottenham. “We are delighted to announce the signing of Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portuguese international midfielder joins us from West Ham United,” the London club said, without specifying the length of the contract.

Tottenham Break the Bank for Fernandes

According to David Ornstein, Tottenham won the race with an offer estimated at around £85 million guaranteed, or more than €90 million. Manchester United were also interested, but the Red Devils reportedly did not want to go that high.

For PSG, who had made enquiries about the player, the deal is now definitively over. Paris lose another option to strengthen their midfield, while Tottenham land one of the most sought-after young players in the Premier League.

The transfer even becomes the biggest in Spurs history. The previous record belonged to Xavi Simons, signed a year earlier from RB Leipzig for €65 million. With Mateus Fernandes, Tottenham are clearly moving into another dimension, while West Ham make a huge profit after signing the Portuguese midfielder from Southampton in 2025 for €44 million.
