Timothy Weah endured a wild evening during Marseille’s 2-1 defeat to PSG in Le Classique. The OM player thought he had been sent off in the first half after a surprising mistake by François Letexier, before eventually receiving a genuine red card after the break.
In the 32nd minute, Timothy Weah challenged a Paris player from behind. François Letexier immediately blew for the foul and walked over to the American to punish him. But the referee reached into the wrong pocket and held up a straight red card in front of a clearly stunned Weah. Fortunately, the confusion lasted only a few seconds.
“Sorry for the scare”
François Letexier quickly realised his mistake. The red card disappeared and the referee instead showed the yellow card he had originally intended to give the Marseille player. Smiling, he even told Weah: “Sorry for the scare.” It was an unusual moment that could have remained nothing more than a funny anecdote from Le Classique, but what happened later gave the incident a completely different meaning.
In the 77th minute, Weah was penalised again, this time for holding back Nuno Mendes. François Letexier showed him a second yellow card and there was no mistake this time: the red card was real. Weah finally left the pitch, forcing Marseille to finish Le Classique with ten men as OM were beaten 2-1 by their Parisian rivals.
The scenario could hardly have been more ironic: François Letexier had simply pulled out his red card 45 minutes too early.
