PSG: Is the Gap Between Starters and Substitutes Too Big ?

Despite their 3-1 victory over Le Mans, PSG failed to fully convince. In its analysis of the match, L’Équipe highlighted a worrying gap in quality between Luis Enrique’s key players and his usual substitutes. Just two days before their Champions League trip to Manchester City, questions are being raised about the depth of the Parisian squad.

Paris Saint-Germain secured three important points at the Parc des Princes on Saturday evening, but the comfortable scoreline concealed some disappointing individual performances. Luis Enrique had opted for extensive squad rotation, giving several regular substitutes a place in the starting lineup. However, the experiment exposed significant differences in quality within the squad. According to L’Équipe, PSG cannot sustain their European ambitions with such a limited group of match-winners. The French newspaper described the gap between the established stars and their backups as a “rather worrying disparity in quality.”

Manchester City Clash Will Test PSG’s Squad Depth

Mika Godts’ first start against Le Mans illustrated the problem. The Belgian winger lost possession 16 times and completed just one of five attempted dribbles before being substituted after 58 minutes. By contrast, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored shortly after coming off the bench, underlining the decisive influence of PSG’s attacking stars. The concerns come at a particularly demanding point in PSG’s schedule, with the French champions preparing to travel to Manchester City on October 14 for their second Champions League match of the season.

The encounter will provide a much tougher examination of the team’s capabilities, but the challenge extends well beyond that fixture. PSG must also face Strasbourg on October 17, Barcelona on October 20 and Lyon on October 25. With five matches in just 17 days, Luis Enrique cannot continually rely on the same starting eleven without risking fatigue. The Spanish coach has always emphasized collective strength, competition for places and regular rotation, but that approach depends on substitutes delivering performances close to the level of the established starters. The Le Mans match suggested that several squad players still have considerable room for improvement.

For Luis Enrique, the challenge is therefore not simply to identify his strongest lineup, but to build a balanced and reliable squad capable of competing throughout the season. PSG possess numerous world-class individuals, yet the difference between their leading players and rotation options could become a major concern in the coming weeks. As two-time defending Champions League winners, the Parisians are chasing a historic third consecutive European crown. Achieving that ambition will require consistent intensity, quality and results over several months. L’Équipe’s analysis serves as a warning: the brilliance of PSG’s stars may not be enough unless the rest of the squad raises its game. The trip to Manchester City now represents the first major test of this crucial period, with Luis Enrique facing the challenge of creating a squad strong enough to compete on every front until the spring.
