Marquinhos scored the decisive goal in PSG’s 2-1 victory over OM and was delighted to celebrate another success at the Vélodrome. The Paris captain admitted that his team suffered more than in some of their previous Classiques in Marseille, but that only made the result even sweeter.
After Marseille’s equaliser, Marquinhos quickly restored PSG’s lead by reacting perfectly to a first effort that had been saved. It was a hugely important goal in a match that remained closely contested for a long time. “It’s always a pleasure to win here. When you come here and win the match, it’s amazing, whether it’s close or not. We’ve had easier matches here, but today it was a good game,” the Brazilian admitted.
Marquinhos: “A Classique Isn’t Played, It’s Won”
Unlike several recent trips to the Vélodrome that PSG had comfortably controlled, Paris were seriously tested this time. “We also had to defend, and even though their team was second from bottom before this match, they’re a good side who challenged us on the pitch. We managed to overcome our difficulties to win, and it feels great. I’m very happy to win here.” For Marquinhos, the performance ultimately comes second in such a special fixture. “As we often say, a Classique isn’t played, it’s won, whether it’s here or at home, and we’re very happy to have won this match.”
The PSG captain also had a more personal reason to smile. His goal in Marseille allowed him to continue climbing the club’s all-time scoring charts. “My goal? I think I’ve equalled Lucas Moura’s number of goals for the club, right? 46 goals, that’s very good! We know how difficult it is to score goals, but when you get the opportunity and can help the team win, it’s always great. Especially here, in Marseille.” A goal in the Classique, a victory at the Vélodrome and three valuable points for PSG: Marquinhos could hardly have asked for a better evening.
