Lionel Messi is already actively preparing for life after his playing career. Still playing for Inter Miami at the age of 39, the former PSG forward has just become the owner of CD Eldense, a club competing in Spain’s second division. And it is not even his first club.
Lionel Messi has no intention of being an inactive retiree. Quite the opposite. Having played for Paris Saint-Germain between 2021 and 2023, the Argentine is beginning to invest directly in European football. Rumoured for several weeks, the takeover was officially announced by Eldense on Thursday. Messi is taking control of a club founded more than a century ago and currently sitting 19th in Spain’s second tier. “Club Deportivo Eldense announces the acquisition of the club by Lionel Messi, opening a new and hopeful chapter in the institution’s more than 100-year history,” the club said in a statement.
Messi Now Owns Two Clubs in Spain
The stated objective is to build for the long term. Eldense described it as “a long-term project” aimed at promoting the club’s “sporting, institutional and social” development. More significantly, the former PSG No. 30 now owns two clubs in Spain.
Last April, Lionel Messi had already acquired UE Cornellà, a team competing in Spain’s fifth tier. The World Cup winner is therefore continuing his career with Inter Miami while making very concrete preparations for what comes next.
After two seasons in Paris and an exceptional playing career, Messi now appears determined to gradually move into a new role: football club owner.
