Lucas Digne’s start to life at Paris Saint-Germain is becoming increasingly complicated. Signed from Aston Villa this summer for around €10 million, the French left-back was not even included in Luis Enrique’s squad to face Monaco at the Parc des Princes on Friday night. It is a strong decision, especially with Nuno Mendes still suspended.
There will be no special treatment at PSG this season, a message Luis Enrique had already made clear in the media during the summer. Ousmane Dembélé was given a somewhat enforced rest, Senny Mayulu was left out against Rennes, and now Lucas Digne has been told to stay at home.
Luis Enrique sends a clear message to Digne
On paper, Nuno Mendes’ absence should have given Digne the perfect opportunity to establish himself. Instead, Luis Enrique has repeatedly preferred other options. Lucas Hernandez played on the left against Rennes, while Warren Zaïre-Emery filled the role against Lille. This time, the message is even clearer: Digne was not called up at all for PSG-Monaco. According to Le Parisien and insider Djamel, it was a technical decision by the coach and the player is not injured.

The decision is particularly striking because PSG are already without Nuno Mendes and are facing an important clash against league leaders Monaco while still searching for their first Ligue 1 victory of the season. Digne had been signed to provide experience and genuine cover for the Portuguese international, but he has so far struggled to earn a regular place in the rotation. Only hours earlier, he had insisted he was not worried about his situation, explaining that adapting takes time and that it would be disappointing to panic after only three matches.
The biggest concern for Digne is that Nuno Mendes will soon return from suspension. If the Frenchman is already struggling for playing time in his absence, the competition could become even tougher in the coming weeks. Digne has played just one Ligue 1 match since joining PSG. His experience and versatility could still help him turn the situation around, but being left out for a major game against Monaco already feels like a serious first warning from Luis Enrique.
