Chevalier Wants to Stay, but PSG Have a Shortlist of Replacements

Paris Saint-Germain had prepared for every possible scenario regarding their goalkeeping position. According to PSGINSIDE-ACTUS, the club’s management drew up a list as early as March featuring several players who could be signed if Lucas Chevalier left. Three months later, however, the situation has reportedly changed significantly.

As usual, PSG considered several alternatives to avoid being caught unprepared during the transfer window. Five goalkeepers were studied by the recruitment department: Gregor Kobel, Elia Caprile, Diogo Costa, Mile Svilar and Zion Suzuki. Two other names were also discussed before eventually being ruled out.

Lucas Chevalier Now Favours Staying at PSG

The arrival of a new first-choice goalkeeper depended on Chevalier leaving the club. The Frenchman is now seriously considering staying in Paris, fighting for more playing time and attempting to establish himself as the starter. A transfer would only become likely again if PSG explicitly asked him to find another club, a scenario that is not currently being considered. He has also reportedly rejected an approach from Rennes.

Should he leave, the former Lille goalkeeper has set three conditions: joining a club involved in European competition, receiving guaranteed first-choice status and earning a salary close to his current PSG wages. Unless all three requirements are met, a departure now appears highly unlikely.

Matvey Safonov, meanwhile, is expected to remain at PSG next season. The club therefore have no plans to recruit a new number one unless one of their current goalkeepers leaves. Kobel, Caprile, Diogo Costa, Svilar and Suzuki are viewed more as contingency options than immediate priorities. Unless the situation surrounding Chevalier changes, PSG could retain their current goalkeeping hierarchy.
