Paris Saint-Germain reportedly ended up choosing Lucas Digne by default to strengthen the left side of their defense. According to PSGINSIDE-ACTUS, the French international was not Luis Campos’ initial priority to serve as Nuno Mendes’ backup.
Before turning to Aston Villa’s defender, PSG’s sporting advisor had reportedly identified Ramy Bensebaïni as his preferred target. The Algerian international’s versatility and experience were highly valued internally, but several obstacles quickly made the deal too complicated to complete.
Why PSG Turned to Lucas Digne
According to PSGINSIDE-ACTUS, Bensebaïni’s ability to play as a left-back, center-back, or wing-back made him an attractive option for Luis Enrique’s tactical plans. His European experience and flexibility would have allowed PSG to switch seamlessly between a back four and a three-man defense. However, Borussia Dortmund had no intention of selling him, while his salary and reluctance to accept a backup role also discouraged the French champions from pursuing the transfer further.

With the Bensebaïni deal becoming impossible, PSG shifted their attention to Lucas Digne. His contractual situation and a clause that could facilitate his departure reportedly made negotiations much easier. Having previously played for Lille, Barcelona, Everton, and PSG between 2013 and 2015, Digne also brought valuable experience, familiarity with Ligue 1, and knowledge of the Parisian environment.
PSG’s objective was to recruit an experienced player capable of providing immediate competition for Nuno Mendes without disrupting the established hierarchy. Digne’s attacking qualities, crossing ability, and experience convinced the club’s decision-makers to accelerate the move. While he was not the club’s first-choice target, the failure to sign Bensebaïni ultimately pushed PSG toward a more realistic solution, both financially and sporting-wise, according to PSGINSIDE-ACTUS.
