With the Ballon d’Or ceremony approaching (September 22), Achraf Hakimi hasn’t shied away from promoting himself.
After a standout season (11 goals, 16 assists), the PSG full-back believes he deserves a spot in the race: “What I’ve done isn’t what a normal defender does. When you score in the quarters, semis and final, you deserve as much as a striker,” he told Canal+.
But his comments didn’t go down well internally. According to L’Équipe, PSG’s leadership felt Hakimi’s words were too self-centered and even tried to cut part of the interview before it aired. While not a major crisis, it has caused a slight rift between the player and the club.
The relationship is reportedly not as smooth as before, with Paris accused of handling the matter clumsily.
Hakimi still key on the pitch
Despite the off-field tension, Hakimi remains indispensable. One of the most used players in the squad, he follows a tailored program to withstand a demanding season featuring Ligue 1, Champions League, AFCON, the Intercontinental Cup and the World Cup.
The Moroccan has no doubts about his ambitions: “If I had to go through another season like the one we just had, I’d sign right away,” he told those close to him. Motivated and ambitious, Hakimi is determined to keep shining – even if PSG will now be watching him more closely.
