After Paris Saint-Germain’s frustrating defeat away to Sporting Lisbon, the ratings handed out by the press and by VIPSG tell two very different stories. While Le Parisien and L’Équipe came down hard on the Parisians, VIPSG offers a far more lenient reading, arguing that the performance did not deserve such a barrage of criticism.
The first symbol of this gap is Lucas Chevalier. Rated 4 by Le Parisien and 3 by L’Équipe, the PSG goalkeeper gets a 5 from VIPSG. While his responsibility on the second goal is noted, the editorial staff still considers his display decent in a match where he was ultimately not tested very often.
A dominant PSG undermined by inefficiency
The defense was also judged very harshly by the press. Marquinhos, Pacho and Nuno Mendes hover around a 4 in the traditional media, while VIPSG gives them marks between 6 and 6.5. From this point of view, the back line was not the real problem, with PSG paying above all for a lack of cutting edge and two poorly managed situations at the back.
In midfield, the difference in interpretation is even more striking. Vitinha, rated 4 by Le Parisien and 5 by L’Équipe, receives a 6.5 from VIPSG. As the conductor of PSG’s play, the Portuguese midfielder delivered a clean and intense performance, even if it lacked a decisive gesture. Fabian Ruiz and Senny Mayulu are also judged more favorably, with the focus placed on PSG’s control of the middle rather than on sheer inefficiency.
Up front, the contrast is the most spectacular. Where the daily papers give Ousmane Dembélé a 4, VIPSG awards him a 7, highlighting his constant activity, his runs and his assist for Kvaratskhelia. The same goes for Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola, who are seen in a better light here. In the end, two readings clash: one of a PSG deemed insufficient and logically beaten, and another of a largely dominant team undone by poor finishing, refereeing decisions and a cruel script—one match, two visions, and a debate that is only just beginning.
