Kylian Mbappé’s latest comments are likely to spark debate. Asked about Warren Zaïre-Emery’s season, the France captain suggested that the PSG midfielder deserved to start the Champions League final against Arsenal, a match Paris eventually won.
Almost everyone was disappointed on May 30 when the starting lineup was announced. Warren Zaïre-Emery began the biggest game of the season on the bench. It was a difficult decision for Luis Enrique, who even apologized to the player during the post-match press conference after PSG’s victory.
Mbappé Defends Zaïre-Emery
Mbappé openly questioned the choice in an interview with L’Équipe. “Zaïre-Emery deserved to start the Champions League final. He had a fantastic season. Unfortunately, he didn’t start because the coach had already settled on his lineup. Alongside Vitinha, he was PSG’s most consistent player in Ligue 1,” said the French forward. The statement sounded like a strong show of support for his former teammate, who started 47 of PSG’s 54 matches before being left out of the final lineup.
Despite Mbappé’s backing, Zaïre-Emery has no intention of fueling controversy. The midfielder admitted he was frustrated at first, telling Téléfoot: “At the time, I was a little frustrated.” However, he quickly defended his coach’s decision, explaining that Luis Enrique’s choices had paid off. “They are the coach’s decisions, his formula. You can’t blame him because he won, so that’s how it is,” he said.
Having come on during the match, the young French international prefers to focus on PSG’s triumph and the club’s second consecutive European title. “When you see the team winning and everything going well, you can only be happy,” he added. For Zaïre-Emery, the only thing that matters now is the trophy lifted at the end of a historic season for PSG.
