Paris Saint-Germain continue to pile up the trophies. Defending UEFA Super Cup champions, the Parisian club retained their crown by beating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on Wednesday.
After their historic back-to-back Champions League triumphs, Paris have now achieved another consecutive European title. PSG were nevertheless seriously tested by a highly aggressive Aston Villa side.
Doué delivers another trophy for PSG
After several early warnings, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a powerful strike into the top corner past Marco Bizot. Aston Villa refused to back down, however, and 17-year-old Brian Madjo deservedly equalised shortly before half-time after causing major problems for the Paris defence.
Luis Enrique reacted at the break by introducing Ousmane Dembélé in place of Maghnes Akliouche. PSG looked more dangerous and eventually regained the lead through Désiré Doué in the 61st minute. Initially flagged offside after winning his one-on-one battle with Bizot, the Frenchman’s goal was awarded following a VAR review.
Paris then had several opportunities to extend their advantage through Nuno Mendes and Kvaratskhelia, while Matvey Safonov made important saves to protect the lead. Despite a few late Aston Villa chances in stoppage time, PSG held on to secure a 2-1 victory. Luis Enrique and his players therefore begin the season in ideal fashion, adding another trophy to an already remarkable collection and further strengthening their status as one of European football’s leading forces.
