The Champions League draw has produced a remarkable surprise for Lucas Digne. Back at Paris Saint-Germain this summer, the French left-back is set to face no fewer than three of his former clubs during the league phase.
Lucas Digne has returned to PSG… and will now come up against several teams from his past. Paris have been drawn against Aston Villa, FC Barcelona and AS Roma, three clubs whose shirts Digne has worn during his career.
Aston Villa, Barcelona and Roma reunions await Digne
The most recent reunion will obviously be with Aston Villa. Digne was still playing for the Villans before joining PSG this summer, meaning he could face his former teammates again very quickly on the European stage. He will also meet Barcelona, where he played between 2016 and 2018, as well as AS Roma, where he spent the 2015-2016 season on loan. Facing three former clubs in a single Champions League league phase is about as symbolic as a draw could get for him.

Digne also knows Paris extremely well, having already represented PSG between 2013 and 2015 before continuing his career abroad. His return to the French capital was supposed to open a new chapter, but the Champions League will immediately bring back memories from several major stages of his career. Aston Villa represents his most recent past, while Barcelona and Roma recall his first major European experiences after his initial spell in Paris.
These reunions will obviously not change PSG’s sporting objectives, but they will give several fixtures an extra dimension for Digne. The French defender could face three former dressing rooms in the space of only a few months, provided Luis Enrique gives him opportunities, whether in Nuno Mendes’ absence or from the bench. It is an unlikely scenario that makes Digne one of the biggest beneficiaries of the draw, at least when it comes to emotional reunions.
