Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly started gathering information on Javi Rodríguez, Celta Vigo’s versatile Spanish defender. The move appears to be viewed as a medium-term option rather than a deal for the final days of the current transfer window.
According to Faro de Vigo, PSG are among the clubs closely monitoring Rodríguez’s situation. Everton, Fulham and Newcastle are also said to be following the 23-year-old defender.
PSG Monitoring Versatile Spain Defender Javi Rodríguez
At this stage, Paris are not necessarily planning an immediate approach. The French champions are instead preparing for future transfer windows, in keeping with their recent strategy of targeting young, versatile players with significant room for development. A product of Celta Vigo’s academy, Rodríguez has established himself in the first team under Claudio Giráldez. The 1.78m right-footed defender can operate as a right-sided centre-back in a three-man defence, as a full-back or as a wing-back, while his passing ability and willingness to contribute in attack make him a particularly modern profile.
During the 2025-2026 season, Rodríguez made 46 appearances in all competitions, including 33 in La Liga and 12 in the Europa League. He has now passed 80 first-team appearances for Celta, while his progress was rewarded with his senior Spain debut on June 4, 2026, in a friendly against Iraq in La Coruña. He came on in the 73rd minute at right-back, becoming the 25th Celta player to represent La Roja.
Rodríguez is under contract with Celta Vigo until June 2028 and reportedly has a €40 million release clause. Although Celta are therefore in a strong negotiating position, a deal below that figure could potentially be discussed. Competition from Everton, Fulham and especially Newcastle could accelerate the situation, but for now PSG’s interest appears to be limited to gathering information rather than pursuing an advanced deal. Rodríguez’s name can nevertheless be added to the list of promising young defenders being monitored by the Parisian hierarchy.
