The uneasy coexistence between Matvey Safonov and Illia Zabarnyi at PSG continues to spark debate. While the Russian goalkeeper and the Ukrainian defender have remained tight-lipped, others are speaking out.
Evgeniy Levchenko, a former Ukrainian midfielder and now president of the Dutch players’ union, claims Zabarnyi was misled when he signed with Paris.
“Ilia’s personal stance is beyond doubt. We don’t know what agreements were made with PSG. In my opinion, Zabarnyi may have been promised, before signing, that Safonov wouldn’t be part of the team. What happened will certainly damage his image in Ukraine. Could he have chosen another club? Yes — PSG simply trapped him, as he trusted the Qataris to resolve a situation that is almost political,” Levchenko told Sport.ua.
His comments reignite the controversy over PSG’s handling of this sensitive case, which sits at the crossroads of sport and diplomacy. Publicly, both players insist things are fine, though Zabarnyi has admitted their relationship will remain strictly professional.
