Arriving in Paris with the ambition to become number one, Matvey Safonov is growing increasingly frustrated. The 26-year-old Russian goalkeeper has yet to play a single minute this season, firmly behind Lucas Chevalier, and his patience is running thin.
A Departure This Winter? Initially recruited to challenge — or even pressure — Chevalier, Safonov has not been given a real opportunity. According to L’Équipe, a January exit can no longer be ruled out. Speaking to Sport-Express in Russia, he didn’t hide his frustration:
“My future will depend on the transfer window. For now, I’m focused on turning things around. I want to prove I deserve to play; the lack of game time doesn’t satisfy me. […] Any offer must be considered, everything depends on the situation when the window opens.”
Goalkeeper Tension Brewing?
Several Russian clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation, with a potential loan move in January already being discussed. For PSG, a serious dilemma looms: Let an ambitious backup leave, or risk internal tension in the goalkeeping hierarchy.
A goalkeeper on the bench too long can become a problem — and Safonov has made it clear: he won’t stay a spectator forever.
