Roberto De Zerbi did not hold back when discussing the choice of location for the Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Kuwait. At a press conference, the Italian coach clearly expressed his disagreement with this decision, stating that such matches should be held on home soil.
While he will indeed travel to Kuwait, De Zerbi emphasizes that it is solely out of professionalism. “I will go because it’s my job,” he explained, adding that this trip does not align with his vision of football. According to him, the issue is neither sporting nor cultural, but purely economic. “It’s not a question related to the country or football; it’s a financial issue, and it doesn’t suit me,” he insisted.
“This kind of match should be played in its own country”
The Italian coach believes that the Champions Trophy should remain an event for local supporters, similar to the Coupe de France. “This kind of match should be played in its own country, in front of its supporters,” he emphasized, reminding everyone of his commitment to the identity and traditions of national football, even though he is not French.
A clear stance that once again reignites the debate surrounding the relocation of French competitions abroad.
