The selection of the 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League Team of the Season has sparked plenty of debate. Despite finishing as the competition’s top scorer, Kylian Mbappé was not included in UEFA’s final XI.
Mbappé’s absence is the biggest surprise of the list unveiled by UEFA this weekend. The French forward likely paid the price for Real Madrid’s elimination before the final, while several Paris Saint-Germain players were rewarded after leading the club to a second consecutive European title. Among them, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was named Player of the Season following an outstanding campaign in Parisian colors.
PSG Dominates Team of the Season
Five PSG players made the final XI. David Raya was selected in goal, behind a defense consisting of Marcos Llorente, Marquinhos, Gabriel, and Nuno Mendes. In midfield, Michael Olise, Declan Rice, Vitinha, and Kvaratskhelia earned places, while Ousmane Dembélé and Harry Kane formed the attacking duo.
Mbappé’s omission is nevertheless expected to fuel discussions in the coming days. The France captain finished at the top of the Champions League scoring charts, but that achievement was not enough to secure him a place in the competition’s best team of the season.
The decision highlights the importance of overall team success in UEFA’s selections, with PSG’s European triumph heavily reflected in the final lineup and Kvaratskhelia receiving individual recognition for his exceptional performances throughout the campaign.
