Despite an outstanding season with Paris Saint-Germain, Warren Zaïre-Emery experienced a difficult moment during the Champions League final victory against Arsenal (1-1, 4-3 on penalties).
Zaïre-Emery admitted what many had already noticed on May 30. There was frustration at not being included in the starting lineup for the Champions League final. After starting 47 of his 54 appearances this season, the French midfielder had to settle for a place on the bench for the club’s biggest match of the year. Speaking to Téléfoot, he acknowledged that the decision was naturally hard to accept.
Understanding Luis Enrique’s Decision
“At the time, I was a little frustrated,” admitted the young Parisian. It was a normal reaction for a player accustomed to starting regularly and playing a key role in the club’s European campaign.
However, Zaïre-Emery holds no resentment toward coach Luis Enrique. The midfielder understands the Spanish manager’s choices and believes the final result fully justified them. “They are the coach’s decisions, it’s his formula. You can’t blame him, he won, so that’s how it is,” explained the French international.
Coming on during the match, Zaïre-Emery still had the opportunity to take part in the historic evening and celebrate PSG’s European triumph. “When you see the team winning and everything going well, you can only be happy. I enjoyed coming onto the pitch and playing for this team,” he concluded, highlighting the collective spirit that helped PSG secure another Champions League title.
