The French national team will be without its head coach for its final group-stage match at the 2026 World Cup. Didier Deschamps has been struck by personal tragedy following the death of his mother.
To attend the funeral, the France manager will temporarily leave the team’s base camp in the United States and return to France in the coming hours. As a result, he will be unable to oversee Friday’s match against Norway.
Guy Stéphan Takes Charge of France
To ensure continuity, the French Football Federation has decided to hand responsibility for the team to Guy Stéphan. Deschamps’ long-time assistant will lead the squad until the head coach returns.
In an official statement, the FFF explained that the decision was made in agreement with president Philippe Diallo, who is currently with the national team. Stéphan will prepare and manage France’s final Group I fixture.
It is a difficult situation for the French squad, which will aim to continue its World Cup campaign while offering its full support to Didier Deschamps during this personal ordeal.
