Lucas Digne’s return to Paris Saint-Germain is becoming increasingly likely. Long regarded as just one option among several, the Aston Villa left-back has gradually won over the Parisian hierarchy thanks to a combination of sporting and financial factors.
A Lucas Digne return to PSG was a move that few could have imagined just a few days ago. Yet the transfer now appears increasingly likely to happen.
Digne’s Experience Has Convinced PSG
According to L’Équipe, PSG particularly like the idea of adding more French players to their squad. “Lucas Digne? You do not change everything overnight, and it is obviously not the main criterion, but we are always in favour of recruiting French players,” an internal club source explained. However, his nationality is not the only factor being considered. His consistency in the Premier League, top-level experience and familiarity with PSG have also influenced the club’s thinking.
At 32, Digne would arrive as a player ready to contribute immediately. Having already represented PSG between 2013 and 2016, he knows the club’s environment and could quickly settle into Luis Enrique’s rotation. The cost of the deal has also played a role, with Aston Villa potentially willing to sell the France international for around €10 million, a fee considered reasonable for an experienced player who is still performing at a high level.
At PSG, Digne would mainly serve as Nuno Mendes’ backup, allowing the Portuguese defender to rest more regularly while providing a reliable option during a demanding domestic and European schedule. An official announcement could follow shortly after the World Cup if the final details are agreed between all parties.
