PSG: Luis Enrique Changes His Plans for Lucas Beraldo

The midfield hierarchy could be significantly reshaped at Paris Saint-Germain. Expected to leave the club only a few months ago, Lucas Beraldo has completely turned his situation around and is now reportedly considered a genuine midfielder by Luis Enrique.

Beraldo has gone from unwanted defender to indispensable super-sub. The Brazilian is no longer viewed simply as a centre-back who can occasionally play further forward. According to L’Équipe, his move into midfield is now considered permanent and could influence how PSG build their squad for next season.

Beraldo Emerges as a Defensive Midfield Option

The 22-year-old was deployed in front of the defence several times last season. His performances against Toulouse, Nantes and Angers reportedly convinced the coaching staff, thanks to his technical quality, reading of the game and ability to play the ball out cleanly. He also contributed a goal and an assist, strengthening Luis Enrique’s belief that he should no longer primarily be used in central defence.

The change is significant because Beraldo joined PSG from São Paulo in January 2024 for around €20 million to play at the back. After an inconsistent start in that position, his future appeared uncertain. However, his more defensive profile now offers something different from Vitinha, João Neves, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Fabian Ruiz, who are generally more focused on creating and progressing the play.

As a holding midfielder, Beraldo can protect the defence, help initiate attacks and allow his teammates to operate further forward. He could play alone at the base of midfield, alongside another player in a double pivot or come off the bench to secure the team. Under contract until 2028, he is now expected to remain at PSG as a valuable midfield rotation option.
