Has Khvicha Kvaratskhelia done enough to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or? Despite Georgia’s absence from the World Cup, the Paris Saint-Germain winger has built an impressive case thanks to his performances in Europe and his ability to deliver in the biggest matches.
The Champions League is perhaps the strongest argument in his favour. PSG successfully defended their European crown by beating Arsenal in the final, with Kvaratskhelia playing a major role throughout the campaign. He finished the competition with 10 goals, behind only Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane in the scoring charts.
Kvaratskhelia delivered when PSG needed him most
His influence went well beyond the statistics. Kvaratskhelia repeatedly changed games with his dribbling, acceleration and creativity. One of his standout performances came in PSG’s spectacular 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, when the Georgian scored twice.
He has also started the new season in impressive fashion. Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in PSG’s 2-1 European Super Cup victory over Aston Villa, helping Paris become only the third club in history to retain the trophy. Aston Villa coach Unai Emery subsequently publicly backed him in the Ballon d’Or race.
The biggest weakness in his case remains Georgia’s absence from the 2026 World Cup. Nevertheless, his Champions League performances, decisive goals, collective trophies and overall influence for PSG give Kvaratskhelia a serious argument. If voters prioritise consistency and performances at the highest European level, the PSG No.7 could be one of the leading contenders for the award.
