In an unexpected turn of events, Lionel Messi, typically associated with fierce rivalry against Real Madrid during his tenure at Barcelona, has made a surprising declaration of affection towards the Madrid club.

Despite his unwavering love for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi objectively acknowledged the merits of their eternal rival. When asked about the best team in the world at present, Lionel Messi revealed that it was Real Madrid.

“The best team in the world? Real Madrid, the current Champions League winner. If we talk about results, Real Madrid is the best. If we talk about performances, Manchester City, under Pep, is the best,” he declared in an interview with Infobae.

World Cup 2026? Yes or No?

He then discussed the Argentine national team. He has never watched the famous 2022 World Cup final against France. “The truth is that I’ve never liked watching myself, neither playing nor being interviewed. I don’t know, and I’ve never seen myself. But there are things, when they are done, like that, with music or have a special meaning, it’s good,” he said. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner then commented on his presence at the 2026 World Cup: “It depends on how I feel, my physical condition, and my realism with myself. And whether I am up to competing and helping the teammates beside me.”

Finally, he concluded: “Being a world champion allowed me to feel fulfilled. I achieved everything, I was able to reach the goals and dreams I had, and being able to say it is very difficult. And we achieved the goal and obviously what we, my family, and everyone wanted the most. But then life goes on. I had to continue in Paris, I had to live here and continue to try to achieve things, to continue winning. Now, we have another challenge with the national team, to try to win a Copa America.”
