The Zion Suzuki saga has ultimately resulted in a return to the status quo at Paris Saint-Germain. After the Japanese goalkeeper’s transfer collapsed at the last minute, the Parisian club is expected to keep the same goalkeeping hierarchy that was established last season.
Matvei Safonov will remain number one, with Lucas Chevalier as number two. According to L’Équipe, Safonov is still PSG’s first choice. The Russian goalkeeper gradually moved ahead of Chevalier last season and is expected to start the new campaign with that status. Chevalier, meanwhile, remains determined to fight to win his place back.
Safonov Remains PSG’s Number One
This decision comes after the dramatic twist in the Zion Suzuki deal. PSG had made significant progress toward signing the Japanese goalkeeper, but the move eventually collapsed at the last minute amid disagreements over commissions demanded by his representatives. Suzuki’s arrival could have completely reshuffled the hierarchy, with uncertainty surrounding the futures and roles of both Safonov and Chevalier.
In the end, PSG are not expected to pursue another goalkeeper following the failure of the Suzuki deal. Safonov should therefore retain his starting position, while Chevalier will remain his understudy and attempt to overturn the hierarchy during the season. PSG’s goalkeeping order is now clear: 🥇 No. 1: Matvei Safonov; 🥈 No. 2: Lucas Chevalier.
After several days of uncertainty and a Suzuki transfer that appeared close to completion, Paris are back where they started. For Safonov and Chevalier, the battle for the starting spot can now resume.
