Introduced in the 80th minute during France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, Bradley Barcola needed only two minutes to make a decisive impact.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward tore through the Senegalese defense almost immediately after coming on. Released into space by Adrien Rabiot, Barcola calmly finished his one-on-one opportunity with a delicate chip, sealing the win for Les Bleus in style.
Barcola Predicted the Opportunity
After the match, Barcola revealed that his goal was far from accidental. During his warm-up, he had already noticed the gaps left by the Senegalese defense and felt confident he could exploit them once given the chance to enter the game.
“The coach spoke a lot about the importance of the substitutes. I knew I could take advantage of the spaces when I came on because I could see them while warming up,” the French international told M6. The 23-year-old winger also explained that the finish itself had been discussed beforehand. “On the bench, we were talking about the chances, and they told me to chip it over the goalkeeper if I got the opportunity. That’s exactly what I did,” Barcola said with a smile.
It was a perfect cameo appearance that highlighted the depth of the French squad at this World Cup. If he continues to make such an impact off the bench, Bradley Barcola could play a major role in France’s campaign in the weeks ahead.
